Glace Bay lottery winner

GLACE BAY — Not many of us can picture willingly jumping out of bed at 4:30 a.m.

When Jessie Butts of Glace Bay awoke to see someone in her community had won the top prize in Atlantic Lottery’s Hit or Miss game, she popped up to check her numbers and scan her ticket.

“Major Winner” popped up on her screen, she said.

“It was unreal, total shock. I’ve never experienced anything in my life like that before.”

Hit or Miss gives players two chances to win: an instant prize of up to $25,000 at the time of purchase and a nightly draw for $250,000. Butt cashed in on the latter, matching all 12 numbers.

“My son was home and normally gets up at 7 a.m. for work, but I couldn’t wait until 7 a.m. to tell him, so I woke him up at 5:30,” she said. “He couldn’t believe it; he thought I was carrying on, but when he came up and looked at the ticket, he was just floored.”

Butts, a retired nurse of 51 years who went back on a casual basis at a local nursing home, said she’ll keep working despite the big win, as caring for others was never about the money for her.

Plans for her winnings include paying off bills, home renovations and treating her son and four granddaughters.
